Brew 9 - Evil Pea IPA

Image
Brew 9 - Evil Pea IPA (Chocolate  HopNob Revisited) Brew day: 25/08/2020 Bottle day: 08/09/2020 I'm going to revisit Brew 3 - a Black IPA. The brew was a bit of a disaster from start to finish - the beer wasn't black and it ended up very, very cloudy and full of trub. The ABV was very low and my mash efficiency was lower back in April. The hop flavour was actually pretty good so I think with some tweaks, I can make this much better.  Firstly, the malt bill. I need more dark malt to bring out the black colour. I'm going to double the amount of Carafa I and increase the content of Carmalt and Light Crystal slightly, as well as slightly more of the base Pale Malt. This looks to give me a target ABV of 5.5%.  I'm also upping the hop bill - going with the amount from the Brewdog recipe - 256g of hop pellets on order - most of which is dry hop. This is going to be a hop bomb! I saved brew day for a rainy day in August - saves wasting a sunny day indoors. I'm using 2 new a...

Brew 8 - Sheepstor IPA (Extract Kit Experiment)

Brew 8 - Sheeptor IPA (Extract Kit Experiment)                                                                                                              Brew day: 02/08/2020 Bottle day: 16/08/2020 Another brew, another collaboration. I brewed with my Dad a few weeks ago and the outcome (Gardener's Glove IPA) was superb. My dad has been amazed at the results of all grain brewing and each and every beer surpasses what he has managed with the old extract kits that he used to use. We talked at length about having a little experiment to see if we could get an extract kit to taste half decent...

Brew 7 - Off The Cuff IPA

Brew 7 - Off The Cuff (Hazy IPA)                                                                                                                                         Brew day: 22/07/2020 Bottle day: 04/08/2020 So, up to now, I have brewed beer based on the recipes kindly provided by Brewdog. I've learned a lot and have had great success and naturally some not so successful brews (See Brew 3...). This time, something a little different for me. I'm going to piece together a recipe that brings together some of my favourite things in beer in the form of a Hazy IPA. I guess you could call it...

Brew 6 - Coffee Hobnob Stout

Brew 6 - Wake Up Call! (Coffee & Oatmeal Breakfast Stoat) Brew day: 30/06/2020  Bottle day: 13/07/2020 After 4 consecutive IPAs - it is time to go back to the dark side and brew a stoat. On of my favourite beers is Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stoat and this is my next aim - an Oatmeal based Stoat with a twist.  I am loosely following Brewdog recipe #129 (Dead Metaphor) but have made some changes to the suggested ingredients. Firstly, I am going to use Northern Brewer hops in place of Magnum (this is all I could source at the time). Secondly, I have increas ed the ratio of Flaked Oat so that my beer with have more Oats. The third twist comes at the end of the boil, more on this later.  I've also decided to use a liquid yeast again - Get 'Er Brewed had a smaller selection of dried yeasts and nothing really suited to a stoat so after some reading online around the various Wyeast strains, I opted for 1318- London Ale III  as a liquid yeast smack pack. I almost forgot to g...

Brew 5 - Gardener's Gloves (Orange and Grapefruit IPA)

Brew 5 - Gardener's Gloves IPA (Orange and Grapefruit IPA) Brew day: 20th June 2020 Bottle day: 3rd July 2020 Another brew day beckons and I've been thinking this one over a lot. My dad has wanted to brew a beer again for ages so this is his Father's Day present - a brew day with his son. I haven't been that happy with the low efficiency I've been reaching after the mash and the resulting low gravities need to be rectified. I've been researching mashing efficiencies and deciding how best to increase my sugar conversion. I bought a new digital thermometer and have decided to insulate my mash tun lid with tin foil as a starting point. The next step is to mash for 90mins (as close to 67 deg C as I can keep it) and then finally, give the brew bag a really good squeeze.  There seems to be a bit of debate around the need to squeeze the bag - some say do and some say don't. I have squeezed the bag a little before and it hasn't resulted in any iss...
