Brew 20 - Summer Sunshine (Bru-1 IPA)
Brew Day: 12/04/2021
Bottle Day: 26/04/2021
Another brew and another new hop variety. I was having a bit of a scout on Get 'Er Brewed's website and there seem to be a lot of new hop varieties available. I wonder if this is due to the fact that industrial breweries are making less beer, leaving more for us mini brewers to access?
I looked at Medusa, Talus, Sultana but settled on a variety called Bru-1. This variety imparts a pineapple flavour - something a little different so settling on a basic pale ale recipe to find out what this hop can do. A slight change to my usual malt bill, I'm using Vienna Malt alongside old faithfuls Maris Otter and CaraMalt.
I'm also going with a liquid yeast again - Wyeast 1056 American Ale.
Brew day arrives and mash goes on as follows:
- 23 litres strike water at 73 deg C
- Preheated mash tun with boiling water
- 1/2 Campden Tab + 2tsp Burton Crystals
- 60min mash @ 64-66 deg C
- Recirculated the wort over the grain bag a few times (aiming to wash through as much sugar as possible).
I collected off the wort and then sparged as follows:
- 8 litres sparge water at 77 deg C (+1/2 Campden and 1tsp Burton Crystal
- Infuse for 30mins
- Collect off and put to boil alongside main batch.
I added the sparged wort at intervals and then mixed wort between the 2 stock pots to distribute the hop oils and alpha acids. The main aim being to add the whole lot into the FV at the end - to get a much out of this as possible.
Hop bill added to boil as follows:
- 20g Bru-1 @ 60mins (37 IBU)
- 10g Bru-1 @ 25mins (13 IBU)
- 1/2 Protofloc Tab @ 15mins
- 30g Bru-1 @ 0 mins
20 litres pours into the FV (well aerated) - this is a very decent sized batch using this set up. Cooled in the mash tun as an ice bath (this didn't work too well - need to rethink). Added liquid yeast once down to around 20 deg C. Now to wait and see.
Dry hop - 40g of Bru-1 added on day 4 and Gravity at this point is down to 1.014. Brew is smelling and tasting really interesting at this point.
On the whole this was a good solid brew. Nothing spectacular but I would brew it again. Feedback was good and a few commented on the bitterness - not something I aimed for but in the end this was a good characteristic of the beer. It reminded me of St Austell's Proper Job. A good bitterness and nice on a hot day. I ended up giving the last few bottles away as the beer was highly appreciated by the recipient. Brew rating: A solid 3.5/5.
